KYLE MATTHEW is currently in advanced classes at The Groundlings, filming an exciting guest star role for Disney’s Bunk’d, and filming his supporting role in an upcoming feature film that will be announced later in the year! Fresh out of USC’s B.A. acting program, Kyle recently starred in Uninvited, which premiered at the Burbank International Film Festival, and Charlie Hughes, which premiered at SXSW Film Festival.
AC: What can you tell us about your upcoming character in Disney’s Bunk’d?
KYLE MATTHEW – While I, unfortunately, can’t currently discuss any specifics about the role, I can tell you that the entire team on Bunk’d couldn’t have been kinder and more welcoming to me. It was an absolutely amazing experience and I’m very excited for everyone to see it when it airs.
AC: Can you recall any funny moments from on-set filming?
KYLE MATTHEW – Let’s just say be careful with not washing your hands so fast that water spills onto you, it looks like you’ve peed your pants, and you’re frantically using a mini fan praying to the gods it dries before you’re called to set. Obviously this didn’t happen to me, but let’s just say….
AC: As an actor, what are you still trying to learn?
KYLE MATTHEW – That I’m enough just the way I am.
AC: How can you tell when you’re reading a great script?
KYLE MATTHEW – This is going to sound melodramatic, but if I’m truly reading a great script…it feels as if time stops.
AC: When did you begin to see acting as a potential career avenue?
KYLE MATTHEW – Growing up, I actually was pretty set on being a professional basketball player. I wore NBA sweatbands every day to school, was obsessed with the Lakers, and even had my bar mitzvah theme centered around basketball. It wasn’t until the 8th grade when I decided to officially make the jump from the court to the screen and stage. This was around the time when I won best actor on Shakespeare Day at my school and also realized my chances of being over 6 foot were slim to none.
AC: What do you want the world to look like in 10 years?
KYLE MATTHEW – Kinder, more inclusive, and with much less systemic inequality for underrepresented communities.
AC: How important is social media to you right now?
KYLE MATTHEW – Social media is an invaluable tool for me to connect with people and share updates on my life and career. That being said, with social media, like many things, depending on how it’s used, can easily go from being useful to toxic.
AC: What’s the biggest realisation you’ve had this past year?
KYLE MATTHEW – Setting boundaries are profound and necessary acts of self-love.
AC: Everyone seems to have an app idea at the moment, what’s yours?
KYLE MATTHEW – An app that helps me come up with a brilliant answer to this question.
AC: What makes you feel nostalgic?
KYLE MATTHEW – Frosted Tips, Heelys, and Bagel Bites.
AC: Aside from your upcoming projects, what are you excited about for the future?
KYLE MATTHEW – Spending more time with my perfect dog-nephews, Sully and Bruno.
