Many people dream of selling their own products online but fear that the process will be too technical or expensive. It doesn’t have to be. If you already have a WordPress site, you can get online with your products in a short amount of time with only a few technical skills required.
Choose your eCommerce platform
Your want to pick the right products to set yourself up for business success. There are a number of third party eCommerce platforms to choose from. The most popular are WooCommerce and Shopify. There are pros and cons to each one. Shopify is a fully hosted platform, so it can be easier to set up and get going. However, there are monthly fees to pay, which can rack up depending on how many features you want.
If you have a WordPress website already then WooCommerce is a cheaper solution. It does require a little bit more time to set up but is free to use but is a great eCommerce website integration option.
You’ll also need to get yourself an SSL (special security layer) certificate which will increase the security on your site and allow you to take in card numbers and other sensitive information from your customers. Check with your hosting platform as they often include an SSL certificate as part of your hosting package or at a reduced rate.
Setting up WooCommerce
Install the WoCommerce plugin and click to run the setup wizard, it will take you through some easy to use settings such as currency and shipping details.
WooCommerce supports PayPal and Stripe payment gateways. Once you’ve finished adding all of your shipping and payment details, you are ready to start adding your products to your store.
Add your products
With WooCommerce, you can sell both digital and physical products from your site. Within your WordPress dashboard, click on Add Product and type in all of your product details and images. You can divide your products into categories, which will make it easier for customers to navigate around your store.
Then scroll down to the Product Data section where you can add things like inventory numbers, prices and shipping rates.
Once you’re happy with your product descriptions and images, you can just repeat the process until all of your products are in your store.
Use plugins to enhance your site
There are thousands of plugins available to help you make your store look fantastic and help your customers navigate around it. If you’re just starting out, keep your plugins simple at the outset and concentrate on things such as contact form, slider, and galleries to show off your products in the best way.
Once you’re happy with the way your online store looks, test everything out. Make sure there are no broken links or errors in product descriptions. Your images should also be high quality and show off your product in the best way.
When that’s all done, you’re good to go and are ready to start promoting your store and watch the sales come in.
