So, you want to set up your own recording studio. There are many reasons why you would want to do this. First up, you may wish to do this because you are in a band and want to make your own studio from which you can record whenever you like. Recording studio time can be costly, whereas if you have your own place to jam and record, you will be able to let the creative juices flow freely without having to worry about time restrictions.
You may want to build a studio to hire out to other people, or so that you can produce other people’s music.
But how do you go about building your own studio?
In this article, we’ll talk through some of the things that you need to do to start your own recording studio.
Choose a Location
Your first task is to find a location for your studio. It needs to be somewhere that is convenient to get to. Look for somewhere with high ceilings and great acoustics. It should also be bigger than you think that you’ll need. This is just incase you get a bigger band in or need to move larger instruments such as drums or Kawai Digital Pianos.
Seal the Cracks
You will need to make sure that the outside sounds stay outside, and the inside sounds stay in the studio. To do this you will need to seal the cracks. Make sure that you use sealing strips made of vinyl of foam to cover over any areas where sound may escape.
Ventilate and Cover
Trapping in the sound does mean that you end up cutting off the airflow. For this reason, you will need to fit ventilation.
Elevate the Floors
The reason that you will need to elevate the floors is so that noises and vibrations from the floor won’t ruin your recordings. The easiest way of doing this is by laying wood on top of foam blocks.
Diffuse the Sound
Depending on the space that you are in, you may end up with an echoey room. This can ruin a recording. One of the ways that you can diffuse the sound and prevent it from bouncing off every surface is by adding furniture such as a sofa into the studio. This will help to soak up some of the sounds.
Pick Your Recording Software
To be able to record, you will need to get some software. Two of the most popular pieces of recording software are Ableton Live and Cakewalk Sonar. Do some research and read some reviews to find out which is best for you.
Install an Audio Interface
Next up, you’ll need to buy and install your mixer. This is the hub of the recording studio. This allows you to bring all of your instruments together into one place to get the right levels.
Choose and Buy the Right Equipment
You will need to buy some equipment for your studio, this will include microphones, headphones, and monitor speakers.
